In the Time of Covid, Where English Lives: A Short Play
By Debbie L. Miller
Asma, 27 and her husband Saleh, 39 live in Brooklyn, New York in 2020 during the pandemic. Saleh arrived from Yemen 15 years ago and Asma came eight years ago.
ASMA
That’s easy for you to say. You’re not stuck in this apartment!
SALEH
That’s ‘cuz I have a job! You think I wouldn’t rather be here with you? Just be happy you’re not in Yemen.
ASMA
I do have a job, Saleh. I’m a housewife. American women say “homemaker.” But, the kids are driving me crazy! “Mamma, help me with my school work! I don’t understand this math!” How can I help them? I cannot read or write this crazy language English very well!
SALEH
I’m sorry, habibti, but if I don’t open the store, I lose business. We’re all suffering. Come on, this pandemic can’t last forever. School will open in a few months and you won’t be so stressed.
ASMA
I don’t know how to use this computer the school sent us.
SALEH
Why don’t you ask the teacher for help? Call her. Please.
